Our Very Own Marathon Man!
1st Horsell Scouts has its very own Marathon Man!
Richard Cackett who's son, Sam is a member of Somers Troup, has decided to run the London Marathon later this year. His chosen charity is 1st Horsell Scouts, as they move ever closer to their new Headquarters. Read his thoughts and training plans for this epic challenge...
"In April 2009 I will be running the London Marathon and raising money for the Horsell Scouts, for some of the equipment that they will need in the years to come. My race number is 3303, and the twentysix miles will be a remarkable achievement, as I try to have fun at the same time as running the distance. Every year the TV commentator says that the runners are having the time of their lives... well I hope to run well and enjoy it.
Running has been a hobby for many years and has helped me keep fairly fit, with a few 10k, and half marathons, but nothing like the physical challenge of the marathon. So now my family make fun of me as their ancient pulls on his trainers and goes off for runs around the Horsell neighbourhood, come wind or rain I have dragged my normally usillanimous body to the threshold and set off for a "fortifying" jog around the area.
So now I'm sure you would like to know how my training has been going. Laid low with the flu over Christmas, then during January my efforts increased to run about six miles each time and a longer run on special occasions. As the deadline of Sunday April 26, 2009, comes closer I will have to get down to some serious effort but at the moment it all seems a little far off to be too serious.
I have planned to do some real "fun", adventure events over the next few weeks as part of my training, so if anybody wants to come along and run with me, then feel free to enter any of the following events and let me know, as the company would be welcome: The Terminator run on Feb.22, Meon Valley Plod March 1, Fleet Half Marathon March 15, and Combe Gibbet to Overton April 5 So please visit http://www.justgiving.com/ richardcackett to pledge what ever you can afford. I hope for a reasonable time, maybe under four hours, but who knows what will happen on the day. The money we raise will change the lives of our scouts, so thank you for whatever money you can spare, on behalf of myself and 1st Horsell Scouts."
