If you go down to the woods today...
There is no need to go in disguise... but you certainly would have bumped into over 60 Beaver Scouts from Woking District enjoying the local forest at Waterers Park in Knaphill!!
The Beavers were taking part in a fun event run by Woking District to celebrate the first Forest Stewardship Council fun day. There were quizzes, treasure hunts, bark rubbings and challenges to complete. Horsell Trailblazers and Adventurers Beavers turned out in force to support the event bringing their families and friends and enjoying a picnic in the sunshine. Prizes were donated by the Forest Stewardship Council and the lucky winners will be announced soon, so fingers crossed everybody.
A highlight of the event was collecting a treasure from the forest to place on the "Fantasy Forest" table. By the end of the day there were no end of interesting leaves, seeds, sticks, flowers and seeds for the Beavers to examine under magnifying glasses! A particular favourite was the Shield Bug which took a liking for one Beaver's sweatshirt and nearly went home with him.
During the day we discovered the oldest tree in the park started out as a seedling in 1810!
How did we do it without cutting the tree down? See the formula below and give it a try...
1. Measure from the ground up the tree trunk 1.5m
2. At that point measure the circumference of the trunk with a piece of string or a tape measure. Divide the answer by 2.5 and that will give you the age of the tree.
Eg: Circumference is 190cm divided by 2.5 = 76 years old.
