Horsell Cubs Joint Summer Camp 2008

Over the weekend of 27th - 29th June, 40 cubs from both Horsell packs met up at Birchmere for their annual pack camp. Following the opening ceremony, the boys were split in to 8 teams and sent off in to the woods to play a wide game. After a while all the teams completed their tasks and returned to camp for supper and (eventually, eh lads) bed.

Saturday morning started out with a hearty breakfast, after which the morning was spent learning fire lighting, pioneering skills and back woods cooking. Akela Mark proved it was indeed possible to bake a yummy cake inside an orange skin and to cook trout perfectly in wet newspaper. Following a barbecue lunch, everyone settled down to a camp Olympics where various activities tested athletic and thinking skills and generally involved getting dirty and wet (if we ever do it again cubs, the idea of the water challenge was to keep the water in the pipe, not spray it all over your team mates...). After supper, we had a quick sweets hunt and then sat (or in some cases slumped) down to a camp fire. By this time it was clear that everyone was exhausted and there were surprisingly few objections when it was suggested that people might want to turn in.

Sunday morning kicked off with a scouts own, a rounders match or two and another wide game. The camp closed with an investiture ceremony for four cubs, after which everyone made their ways home, pleasantly exhausted. Akelas Andy and Mark would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who helped make the camp possible (you know who you are) and to say a special thanks to those who baked cakes for us even though we'll be dieting now for the rest of the year...
