Double for Martians

It was a great start to the Easter break, when three Explorer Scouts, Ashleigh Foulser, Becca Challis and Jessica Burrowes from the Martian Explorer Scout unit based in Horsell were presented with the Chief Scout Diamond award, on Monday 17th March.

The three girls have also completed their Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award.

For the Service section they helped out at Brownie Guides and dog walked for the Cinnamon Charity Trust,, and for the Skills part of their award Jess toured Germany last year as a member of a concert choir; Ashleigh learnt to drive a power boat, whilst Becca trained in the care of horses.

For the Physical section, the girls tried Tap dancing, climbing and abseiling. After a long period of training for the Expedition section all three under took a practise hike on the Isle of Wight, and then went on to carry out a three day expedition on Exmoor covering over 48 km, in what was the wettest June weekend on record. "It certainly tested our kit and waterproof clothing" said Jess "but we all had a great time".

As well as completing the four sections they had to under take Environmental and International projects to finally complete the Chief Scouts Diamond award. This is the penultimate to the highest and coveted Queens Scout award, and the D of E Gold. "with all the other pressures, it is a considerable commitment from the young people to achieve these awards" said Brian Pinto the Explorer Scout Commissioner for Woking, and added "which is a bonus to their academic achievements".
