Martians in Three peaks Challenge

Ashleigh writes about a recent Woking Explorer Scout expedition.

We arrived on Friday with little time to unpack before donning our romper suits and wellies for some caving in Ingleborough. This was great fun and included climbing down a waterfall before being squashed in the cheese press to get out the other side. Then to bed as we were to get up at 5am the next day to start the 3 Peaks Challenge.

First was Ingleborough, still snow-capped when we reached the top, and with an icy descent down. By now we had got ourselves nicely warmed up for Whernside, the tallest of the 3 peaks. After pausing at the top to brave the snow and hail and to eat our packed lunches we stopped to invest one of the Explorers before we started our descent.

Two groups carried on to complete the last of the three peaks in the planned 12 hours. To do this meant a treacherous descent in the dark. For the third group it was an early rise again on Sunday as they had decided to complete the third peak, meanwhile the other two groups had some fun rock climbing.

By one o'clock on the Sunday all the groups had now completed the Challenge and were getting ready to head home and a lovely hot bath!

If you, your son or daughter is aged between 14 and 18 and would like to join the Explorers then please contact the Group Scout Leader and he will get in touch.
